That conversation about cancer, which pissed me off!

Standard

Why are social gatherings exciting?
Well for me, it’s an exciting opportunity. An opportunity to know new people and old people better. An opportunity to conduct a little poll about “who will win the coming elections”,works done by present government, etc.
So I was in this party, which was pale. Since, there was nothing for me to do, I took a seat. Soon a girl joined me. And then, as the universe’s rule, we were into talking. Though I have known that pretty girl since childhood as we were common guests at  uncountable parties, gatherings but I never got to know her. So we were into talks when we were joined by her brother. I don’t exactly remember to what she replied  to him saying “Cancer people are infectious, so stay away”.
I absolutely hated the way she, insensitively joked about cancer. And also confused because I could not decide if she was really stupid to call it “infectious” or I was missing the catch. So with a laugh, somewhat similar to Chandler’s office laugh, I clearly told that I am an idiot to not able to understand her.
She continued, “oh, cancer is an infectious disease, you know.” trying to explain me.
Me-(frustrated)” no, it’s not. And is he a cancer patient?”
She– “No, it’s a joke. And ,well there are so many kinds of cancer, koi to hoga hi”
Me– “It’s not like that, when cells divide uncontrollably….” I tried to clear her doubts when she interrupted. This time, trust me, I was terrified to hear her next words.
She– “Who cares about cancer?”

And boom!!!
I never come to conclusions with one incident. I had made myself happy thinking that she was stupid for not having basic knowledge about cancer and moreover she was an insensitive girl. But I was shocked that majority of people present there were equally clueless. Maybe they don’t know it because they never had to face it (touch wood) or maybe because it was not in one of their chapters or just chose to stay mumm, for god knows what reason. But today, our world is not confined to books. It’s way more beyond. There, in that party, everyone was digitally connected to the world. But they are more busy in themselves. In their virtual world. A world which did existed but was equal to not existing. A world all about their demands, their likes, dislikes, happiness, sorrows, hopes, etc. A world, all about them. Yes, that selfish, virtual world!

This world has actually made people selfish. People keep painting themselves in an image, which is completely  different from the real self, so that complete strangers can like them! We keep trying to please someone, who doesn’t stand anywhere in our lives.

Also,I believe that we, teens, aren’t using our privileges properly. We  are well facilitated and equipped with different mass medias and we have access to information more easily. So we have some responsibilities to others, as well. I agree that we can’t  mug up gigantic books and be Mr-know-it-all. Even Jack couldn’t master all. You only need to be curious. Curious about the world around, the happenings, the issues concerning others, like you are about the girl or the guy next door, about knowing the income of any other person or the marks of that famous Sharmaji’s son!

Be a responsible and sensible person. Use your powers wisely. Don’t keep blaming the education system, school authorities etc. because everything can’t be taught. Knowledge can’t be fed, it has to be achieved or earned. Don’t be a fool. If you don’t know something, don’t be lazy and try to look it up. Because you never know when that out of course knowledge turns out to be helpful. Keep educating yourself and break the walls of common myths about diseases. Patients already suffers a lot, don’t make their living more terrible! They have more to deal with than your stupid misconceptions!
